Whatever station in life you’re in right now, there’s always room for more happiness. The pursuit of happiness is what fuels most of our day-to-day actions and thoughts. But there’s this preconceived notion that being happy requires a major shift in one’s life, such as a windfall of money or a relationship with an attractive partner. That cannot be any further from the truth. Here are four small adjustments to make that can lead to more happiness:
Be Less Selfish
People are innately selfish, with some people being more selfish than others. This trait, however, has a negatively powerful influence on your life’s direction. Selfishness should be switched to selflessness, or one’s ability to think of other’s well-being. This can be practiced on a daily basis through simple yet powerful actions, such as buying a homeless person breakfast or expressing your gratitude to your parents or friends.
Avoid Jealousy and Envy
These are two similar emotions that are both toxic to a healthy and fulfilled lifestyle. If you aren’t genuinely happy for a friend who recently got a job promotion and instead becomes spiteful of him/her, you are likely causing yourself more stress and frustration, which eventually leads to a life of depression. Being happy for other’s successes and progress paves the way for your own success and progress.
Be More Disciplined
Self-control and discipline are two of the most common personal issues that hinder people from realizing their true potential. If you wish to live the best life you could possibly create for yourself, you need to have a more disciplined mindset. Discipline creates healthy habits, which in turn lead to better results both personally and professionally.
Judge Less
People love judging others, either consciously or subconsciously. And yet the irony of it is that most people hate to be at the receiving end of it. Rather than looking for weaknesses and mistakes that you can nitpick in others, try to be helpful and instead correct them. Rather than judging someone for always being late, for instance, you can suggest a faster route to work instead.
As you may have noticed from the list above, most of the negative forces that deter you from happiness come from within. Thus, it makes sense to start making small changes to your mindset and behavior in order to enjoy more of life.
